Why is crate training good for my dog?

As den animals, dogs have a natural desire to rest in a sheltered and enclosed area.
A crate provides that sense of security and comfort they crave. Providing a crate for your dog when you cannot be home can help to eliminate separation anxiety. Crates also help dogs regulate their elimination schedules as dogs naturally do not want to soil where they sleep. Crates are a safe and secure place for your dog to rest when you are unable to watch him and ensure that he is not getting into trouble. We strongly encourage you to talk to your vet about the important benefits of crate training and appropriate lengths of time for your dog to stay in his crate. The crate is a welcome lifelong retreat and bedroom and should not be used as a punishment. All dogs should enjoy a nice long walk or other form of exercise with an opportunity for elimination prior to being left in a crate.

What size crate should I buy?

The crate should be large enough for your dog to stretch out comfortably, to stand up and turn around. If you are buying an adult sized crate for your pup, you will want to make the space smaller by adding a box to the back of the crate. This will prevent your pup from sleeping in the back of the crate and soiling in the front.
